Alfa Romeo was founded in 1910 in Milan, at the beginning only as A.L.F.A., "Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili", och almost immideately it started its venture in motor racing. The name Romeo derives from Nicola Romeo who turned the company into an arms manufacturer during the first world war. After the war, Alfa Romeo went back to making cars.

Alpine was founded in Dieppe in 1955 by Jean Rédélé and made racing cars based on humble Renault cars like the 4CV. Alpine were very successful in racing in the 50s and 60s, 1973 the company was bought by Renault and continued making performance models of Renault cars, often sporty two-seaters.

The origins of Audi, the premium brand of the Volkswagen Group is not very easy to follow, but it is safe to say that the marque was founded by August Horch in the early 1900's as he had been maneuvered out of his earlier company, Horch. The two brands were however joined together again in 1932 when they formed Auto Union together with DKW and Wanderer, hence the logo with four rings joined together.

Dacia

The Romanian car company Dacia was founded by the communist party in 1966, and its first car a licensed version of the Renault 8 rolled off the assembly line in 1968. In 1969, the Dacia 1300, a licensed Renault 15 was presented. Dacia 1300 was to be produced until 2004, albeit modernised from time to time. Dacia also developed their own versions of the 1300, where one of the most known is the 1307, a crew cab pick-up. Dacias first in-house developed car, Dacia Nova, went on market in 1995.

Nissan emerged as a car maker in 1930 when the company aquired DAT Motorcar Co. Nissan's car production was developed during the 30's, not least when licensed production of the Austin 7 began. The cars were predominantly sold under the brand Datsun, and the name Nissan was used for commercial vehicles on the Japanese market. In 1966 Nissan/Datsun merged with Japanese car maker Prince, the company behind the Skyline-models still being produced today.

Fiat, "Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino" was founded in 1899, opening its first factory in 1900. The first year's production was a mere 24 vehicles. Already in 1908 Fiat started selling its cars in the U.S., where it was an exclusive and luxurious brand, a lot more expensive than the average domestic Ford or Chevy. In 1916, Fiat started building the Lingotto plant in Turin, a building by many considered one of the world's most beautiful car factories. During the Italian regime of the 30's Fiat had to concentrate on the domestic market, turning more to production of small and inexpensive cars as well as railway equipment and airplanes.
